An Operating System is the software which communicates with the hardware of a PC and works as the intermediary between applications and the hardware, including peripheral devices such as a printer, a computer mouse or a keyboard. When you run an app, it transmits requests to the OS through an API (Application Program Interface) and the interaction is done via a command line or a Graphical User Interface (GUI). Similar to a personal computer, web hosting servers also use an Operating System which acts as a host for all of the software installed on them, which includes script applications or server-side software such as a flash server, a VOIP server, and many others. A virtual machine can be generated on a physical one, so you can install a guest OS on it and have a different system environment in contrast with the physical server host Operating System.
Multiple OS in VPS Servers
Our VPS server plans include three Linux distributions which you could select from for the Operating System of your new server - Debian, Ubuntu and CentOS. Aside from being absolutely free, the OSs are very stable and risk-free and the reason to offer the 3 of them is to ensure that you'll be able to run each application that you'd like, as different pieces of software may have different requirements regarding the environment they can be used on. Each of the three OSs is supported by a large community of developers who have created many hundreds of software packages that you can install and use on your VPS. Based on the Operating System which you pick, you will also be able to select between 3 different Control Panels to handle your website hosting content. Needless to say, if you decide that you need a new OS, we can always reinstall the server with it. As a paid upgrade, we also offer you weekly updates of the Operating System for optimum stability and security.
Multiple OS in Dedicated Servers
If you decide to acquire one of our dedicated servers, you'll find three Operating Systems on the registration page since we want to give you a larger choice for the system environment on the server as different applications could have particular requirements. CentOS, Ubuntu and Debian include different modules developed by their vast support communities, so you can select each of these OSs and take advantage of a stable and secure web hosting service. Based on your selection, you'll also have different Control Panels to choose from. Of course, we can always change the Operating System in case the one you have selected in the beginning does not meet the requirements of the software which you want to run. We can also upgrade the OS regularly to keep it as secure as possible using our Managed Services upgrade package.
